Where do I get my FTP information?

Your FTP information is available from your web site hosting provider (the company that makes sure your site is online 365 days a year). Your web designer should also have this information, or anybody else who has made changes to your site for you in the past.

What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the easiest way to transfer files over the Internet. In fact, you probably already use FTP. The most common use is to download files from the Internet. The ability to transfer files back-and-forth makes FTP essential for anyone creating or editing web pages, amateurs and professionals alike.

In order to edit your web site using WebbEdit, you must provide us with your FTP information. This way, WebbEdit will be able to give you access to edit your web pages. WebbEdit will store this information securely and we will never disclose such information to third parties. Please refer to our Permission and Privacy Policy for more information on our policies and procedures.

Exactly what is it?

Your FTP information consists of the following:

  • An FTP Address, such as ftp.yourwebsite.com, or 123.231.123.231 or sometimes it is simply www.yourdomain.com

  • An FTP username and FTP password - Only people who know the FTP username and FTP password can make changes to your website.

When you want to make a change to your web site using WebbEdit, WebbEdit will connect to your site's FTP address with the FTP username and FTP password to make the change.
